How to compare wallpaper installation quotes fairly

Compare the actual walls, product, removal, preparation, material responsibility and access assumptions instead of comparing headline totals alone.

Two people comparing wallpaper samples, an installation brief and paperwork at a table.

Key planning point

Two totals are comparable only when their scope and assumptions are comparable. Check preparation, removal, material supply, access and exclusions before choosing an installation quote.

Start with a common project brief

Give each installer the same wall list, dimensions, photographs and product information. Specify whether the project is one feature wall, a full room, removal, or a combination. A quote based on thin printed paper is not directly comparable with one based on a specialty textile or a custom mural.

If the material is undecided, ask which assumptions support the allowance and what needs confirmation later. An early budget discussion is useful, but it should not be represented as a fully verified material-specific scope.

Look closely at preparation and removal

Check whether old wallpaper removal, backing and paste cleanup are included. Ask how hidden damage or multiple layers will be handled after a test. A simple installation price can reasonably exclude unknown repairs, but those exclusions should be visible.

For the new finish, clarify cleaning, repair and primer responsibilities. Fresh paint curing, loose coatings and moisture concerns can affect readiness. A lower total that assumes ready walls is a different package from one that includes an assessed preparation scope.

  • Which existing layers are removed?
  • Who repairs and primes the exposed wall?
  • How are findings outside the original assumptions reviewed?

Check material and layout assumptions

Identify who calculates, orders, receives and inspects the wallpaper. Quantity depends on repeat, match type, wall height and roll dimensions; nominal area coverage can be misleading. Confirm whether the material is already on site and whether batches match.

Discuss focal points and seam layout for prominent patterns. A mural needs an approved crop and complete panel set. Natural grasscloth can show paneling. Those characteristics should be understood before selecting a quote, not treated as a generic promise of invisible seams.

Compare access and operational responsibilities

Tall walls, stairwells, fixed furniture and busy occupied rooms can change the work. Make sure every quote uses the same access assumptions. List who moves furniture, removes fixtures and reinstates electrical or mounted items. Specialist work should remain with the responsible trade unless it is explicitly and appropriately included.

Commercial inquiries should include drawings, finish schedules and phasing. A desired completion date is not proof that materials, walls and access are ready. Check whether the proposed sequence respects product requirements and the work of other contractors.

Ask for clarity, not an unsupported guarantee

A useful quote explains the scope, assumptions, exclusions and how changes are agreed. Ask questions about anything you cannot compare. Do not rely on an unsupported promise that every seam will disappear, every old wall will strip perfectly or every later repair will be invisible.

Keep the accepted scope, product instructions and correspondence together. At handover, review the agreed work and retain care information and labeled spare material if supplied. Clear documentation helps both sides understand what was requested and what still needs a separate decision.

Manufacturer reading and practical caveats
